"La tentation d'un pouvoir autoritaire dans la France de 2019 trouve ses racines dans la vision économique du candidat Macron. Depuis des décennies, la pensée néolibérale mène une guerre larvée contre le modèle social français de l'après-guerre. La résistance d'une population refusant des politiques en faveur du capital a abouti à un modèle mixte, intégrant des éléments néolibéraux plus modérés qu'ailleurs, et au maintien de plus en plus précaire d'un compromis social. À partir de la crise de 2008, l'offensive néolibérale s'est radicalisée, dans un rejet complet de tout équilibre. Emmanuel Macron apparaît alors comme l'homme de la revanche d'un capitalisme français qui jadis a combattu et vaincu le travail, avec l'appui de l'État, mais qui a dû accepter la médiation publique pour " civiliser " la lutte de classes. Arrivé au pouvoir sans disposer d'une adhésion majoritaire à un programme qui renverse cet équilibre historique, le Président fait face à des oppositions hétéroclites mais qui toutes rejettent son projet néolibéral, largement à contretemps des enjeux de l'époque. Le pouvoir n'a ainsi d'autre solution que de durcir la démocratie par un excès d'autorité. Selon une méthode classique du néolibéralisme : de l'épuisement de la société doit provenir son obéissance."

Dictatorships are a central focus of contemporary historical research and have taken on more relevance in recent years. How should historical researchers view dictatorship? Are there new approaches to be applied? This volume offers pithy answers. Two competing viewpoints are presented for each key theme: society, economy, institutions, culture, gender, comparisons/interconnections, and violence. "As Jude Blanchette details in China's New Red Guards, two worrying trends in contemporary China point to Maoism's revival. First, an increasingly popular hard-edged form of nationalism that is reflexively anti-Western has taken root. The second is an unapologetic embrace of extreme authoritarianism that draws inspiration from the Maoist era. China's assertive stance in the South China Sea and anti-Japanese rhetoric represents the former, and the massive crackdown on liberal thought since Xi Jinping assumed the presidency represents the latter. The result is plain to see: a more authoritarian and more militaristic China. Blanchette goes further than this, though, arguing that what we're seeing is a full-fledged Maoist revival. He centers his story around a cast of nationalist intellectuals and activists who have helped unleash a wave of populist enthusiasm and nostalgia for the Great Helmsman's policies. That, combined with Xi's quick implementation of a range of authoritarian policies, suggests that the Maoist revival is neither epiphenomenal nor a passing fad. The ramifications, Blanchette suggests, are clear: those in the West who have been predicting waves of democratization and liberalization are living in a dream world, blithely unaware of either the Communist Party's commitment to authoritarianism or the degree of its residual veneration for the CCP's founding leaders. In sum, China's New Red Guards not only will reshape our understanding of the political forces driving contemporary China, it also demonstrates how ideologies can survive and prosper despite pervasive rumors of their demise"--
